A festive ode to Liverpool by Dublin band Monster Monster has become a firm favourite at Anfield, home of Liverpool Football Club.
‘Christmas In Liverpool’ was played at Anfield on Saturday last when Liverpool beat Stoke City 1-0. The song is set to get more plays over the busy Christmas period at the legendary football venue.
Now the song is becoming a huge hit with Liverpool fans too.
You Tube hits for the song have skyrocketed and BT Sports are considering using the song for their Christmas schedule.
This is all great news for Monster Monster songwriter, guitarist and life-long Liverpool fan Mick Stuart.
“Christmas In Liverpool is a love song to Liverpool,” says Mick. “We arrived in the studio last summer in sunny Dublin in our shorts all set to record our new song, Friday Night In Liverpool. Our drummer, Tommy Gray, was experimenting with some sounds including some bells. The whole vibe felt Christmassy. We tried writing some terrible Christmas lyrics and thankfully scrapped them all. In the end we simply replaced “Friday Night’ with ‘Christmas’. We feel we would never have been able to write a Christmas song had we tried.”
The band was inspired to write the song after “a cold rainy night in Dublin” says Mick. “Reflecting on being vulnerable and exposed in a city. The line, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ came to mind, giving hope in a difficult situation. Once we had that, all the things we love about Liverpool came to mind, its kindness, its music, its football.”
The accompanying video has been a big hit. “Making the video was a straight-forward process,” says Mick. “We hopped on a boat and drove to the city. We caught some great footage of the vibrancy of Liverpool on a Friday night.”
